Sperry invented the world\'s first boat shoe after a near-fatal fall on a wet ship deck. Inspired by his dog\'s ability to run on ice, Sperry used a penknife to cut grooves into a rubber sole, a process known as siping, which provided the shoe with its non-slip traction Sperry\'s initial design was the canvas Circular Vamp Oxford, or CVO. It featured a quick-drying canvas upper and a vulcanized rubber sole with Sperry\'s signature siping for superior grip. This design was first sold via mail-order to yacht club members and then through retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch. In 1940, the U.S. Navy adopted the CVO as its official shoe. Today, the Sperry CVO is still produced Collaborations Sperry has continued to evolve its product line and engage with modern fashion. In recent years, the brand has collaborated with contemporary designers and brands to offer fresh takes on its classics.
